Descriptif
This course provides an overview of State and local governments and aims to provide a better understanding of the balance of powers between the federal and State governments and how this balance has shifted over time. The United States, as its name indicates, is not a unitary form of government but a federation composed of 50 States, each with its own system of government. As the powers of the national government are limited in the Constitution to foreign policy, defense and interstate business and activities, everything else is reserved to the States. In order to better approach some of the key issues in the United States today, such as education, the criminal justice or healthcare, it is therefore crucial to understand the different layers of federal, State and local governments and see how they work together.
